How do I get a Spanish NIE from abroad?
Short answer
Apply at the Spanish consulate that covers where you live, with form EX-15, your passport and proof of the fee paid on form 790 code 012. Alternatively, apply in person at a police station in Spain, or give a power of attorney to a representative who applies for you.
Three ways to apply
1. Through a Spanish consulate. Every Spanish consulate abroad handles NIE applications for people in its area. You book an appointment, attend in person and submit the forms. The certificate is usually sent back to you or collected later. This is the most common route for owners who cannot travel to Spain.
2. In Spain, at a police station. If you are going to Spain anyway, you can apply at a national police office that deals with foreigners (oficina de extranjería or comisaría). Appointments can be hard to get in busy coastal areas, so book early.
3. Through a representative. A lawyer, gestor or trusted person in Spain can apply on your behalf if you give them a power of attorney. The power is usually signed before a notary in your country, then legalised or apostilled and, where needed, translated. This takes longer to set up but avoids any travel.
The documents
Whatever the route, prepare:
- form EX-15, the application for a NIE, completed and signed;
- your passport (original and copy);
- proof of the fee, paid on form 790 code 012;
- a document explaining why you need the number, such as the deed of the property, an inheritance document or a letter about your tax obligations;
- for a representative, the power of attorney.
Requirements vary slightly between consulates, so check the list on the website of the one you will use.
Timing and tips
- Allow several weeks between booking and receiving the certificate.
- Apply for every person who will need to file: both spouses, every heir.
- Keep a scan of the certificate with your property papers; you will quote the number on every return.
- If you are handling an inheritance, start the NIE applications straight away, since the inheritance tax deadline is six months.
Once the NIE is issued, you can file your Modelo 210 and pay from abroad. See why a NIE is needed and the guide on NIE, digital certificate and Cl@ve.
